Facts about Vertigo Treatment and Balance Problems

September 29, 2013 By Tim Burnell, PT

Vertigo treatment is available if you feel off-balance and/or dizzy? Do you feel as though either you or the objects around you are swaying, spinning or moving? If so, you may have Vertigo. Vertigo can lead to nausea and even disability. Vertigo and dizzy problems can cause problems for any aged person, but is quite common in seniors. This article will go into further detail about vertigo treatment and balance problems.

Vertigo

Statistics: Dizziness affects 1/3rd of people aged 65 or older. From 2001 to 2004 over 35% of people aged 40+ (over 69 millions American) had vestibular dysfunction. Over 8 million Americans have chronic problems with balance while an additional 2.4 million report problems with dizziness (chronic). YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Call us Today (941) 925-2700. Back In Motion, Sarasota Physical Therapy is the only privately owned outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic in Sarasota to offer licensed Physical Therapists who are Certified in Balance and Vertigo by The American Institute of Balance (AIB)!!Dizzy.

Physical Therapy For Vertigo Symptoms

The Licensed Physical Therapists at Back In Motion have been trained by The American Institute of Balance. Their research may be found in leading peer reviewed ENT and Audiology journals. Most noteworthy are  International Journal of Audiology and the Journal of the American Academy of Audiology. Therefore The Balance Therapy you receive at Back In Motion will be performed by a qualified professional who has the appropriate training.

The origin of balance is the Vestibular system in the ear. People who have frequent episodes of vertigo are said to suffer from a vestibular disorder. Tinnitis or ringing in the ears and hearing loss can also contribute to balance problems. As well as visual input (how well we can see), proprioception (the body’s ability to sense movement), and the cerebellum (part of the brain stem) are all factors to consider when assessing for balance disorders.

Do’s/Don’ts/Common Myths

Do’s:  Get up slowly from sit to stand or from lying down to sitting up. Sit on the edge of the bed for a few minutes upon sitting up prior to standing.  Stand or sit up slowly. Consequently, This limits sudden blood flow changes in the head which can contribute to feeling light headed or contribute to a drop in blood pressure.

Dont’s:  Do Not start walking if you are dizzy upon standing up.

Common Myths:

Myth: I have to live with this.

Truth: The right treatment can completely eliminate symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and fall risk.

Myth: I must have had a stroke because I am so dizzy all the time.

Truth: The most common cause of dizziness is BPV (Benign Positional Vertigo). It is caused when tiny crystals in the inner ear break free and float around in the inner ear fluids. Therapists can completely eliminate the symptoms associated with BPV after only 1 or 2 visits!!

What to do next:  You or your loved one do not have to suffer any longer while finding immediate fast acting relief. There is a fast, painless, and affordable solution (we accept most health insurances including Medicare). Call us now to find out if you are a candidate for our revolutionary balance treatment.
